Procedure, Fees
I work in traditional oils on Belgian linen.
I meet with the client at my studio in Norwell, Massachusetts. Together we discuss the pose, select the clothing to be worn and any props necessary for the painting. Many examples of my work are on display to help with the decision process. Usually only one scheduled photo session is necessary. I often use a combination of elements drawn from more than one image.
A portrait from an existing photograph may also be commissioned. I can work from suitable color or B&W photography. I prefer to work from photos that employ natural light or indirect light.

" Nothing in a portrait is a matter of indifference.  Gesture, grimace, clothing, decor - all must combine to realize a character."

Many of my clients prefer that I choose the frame for their portrait. My frame maker has hand carved moldings and a special finish uniquely suited to my painting style. If you would like me to frame your portrait, pricing can be requested.
Fees for portraits from existing photographs start at $2,000 and are quoted on request.
Send me a scan of your photo by email or send a copy by regular mail. After reviewing the image, I will be happy to discuss the possibilities with you by phone or email and provide you with a pricing estimate.

Portraits from Sittings
Shelley Thayer Layton
Fees for portraits from sittings range from $3,000 to $14,000  depending on size and complexity, such as elaborate patterns, backgrounds, additional elements.
One third of the total price is due upon acceptance of the commission with the remainder due upon the portrait's completion. Generally I can complete and deliver a portrait in three to six months.
